Bringing the village together

What we do

Our Aims

The Social Club is run by a commitee of volunteers with the aim of providing events, gatherings and other opportunities for the people of our village to get together and get to know each other better.  It is not a membership club, nor indeed a social club in the 'brown beer and bingo' sense - we're just a bunch of people trying to build the 'social side' of our village.

We recognise the important role that both our local pub, the Okeover Arms, and our church, St. Mary's, play in bringing elements of the community together and providing social networks for the people who visit/attend them.  The Social Club aims to complement these by offering events and activities that are free from religious or commercial interests,  in order to reach a broader spectrum of villagers.  We aim to work co-operatively with the  Okeover Arms and the church to build a stronger village community in which both of these important institutions can thrive alongside the Social Club.

We aim to be inclusive and offer something for everyone: children, young people and adults alike.

The Pavilion

The Pavilion is a small timber building in the playing field that we use as our village hall.  It's not in great shape these days, but it is still (mostly) watertight and is in regular use.  There is a main hall with room for [XX] seated and [XX] dancing, as well as a kitchen.  There is a range of exercise equipment available for the use of the Keep Fit group.

The pavilion can be hired by anyone in the village for £10 per 4 hours or part thereof.  Children's parties are charged at £5.

The Playing Field

The playing field is kindly leased free of charge to the Social Club by the Okeover Estate, for the benefit of the whole village.  It is well used by the children of the village as a recreation ground.  There is a full size grass football pitch with netted goals, as well as netball/basketball hoops and general grass areas.  Toilets and changing facilities are available for football matches and other village events.

The field is mown and generally kept in excellent condition by Geoff Duckmanton, using a tractor loaned by William Maskery.  This is no small task, often requiring twice-weekly cuts in high summer.  We are most grateful to both for their generous contribution to this important aspect of village life.

Hardwood benches in the field have been kindly donated by Carol Compton in memory of Andy Crook.

We hire the field to the Aztecs football team, with the revenue being used to run village events.
